St. Elizabeth’s is an all girls secondary school (grades 6th-12th). In its region, it provides the best education for students that are not able to afford high private school costs. St. Elizabeth is a boarding school and has 1,000 students that study and board at their school.

listening to the students

The students voiced their thoughts on how water and sanitation have been affecting their education. The school used to have a water connection, but during civil unrest in the 1990s, their main water source was destroyed. Now if students needed water, they would walk off school grounds to the neighboring community. Students do not like doing this on their own. They feared being attacked by someone and every time they walked to get water, they would miss 3-4 class periods.

Students also expressed the issue with sanitation at the school. There are only 6 restrooms for the entire student body. At times, students can wait a long time to use a restroom and to wash their hands. Students do not have any plan put in place to properly use and care for their menstrual health.

Based on what the students have told us, we are here to help them with their clean water and sanitation solutions.

A School working together

In order to come to a final project and management structure, it involved working hand in hand with students, teachers, faculty, the school board, and the parents teachers association.

Creating a healthy learning environment

With a clean water and sanitation solution being completed together, a healthier learning environment can be created that better fosters education.

Your Donations At Work

The clean water solution was completed in November of 2020 while the sanitation solution was completed in January of 2021.
The immediate results we have learned include,

  1. The walk to collect water has been eliminated since there is easy clean water access throughout the entire school.

    2. With more restrooms, students haven’t seen any lines form and have said open defecation has disappeared.
The school smells better which makes the students happier.

    3. Students feel cleaner, healthier, and happier because they use clean water to drink, shower, wash, and clean with.
