Many organizations that do work resource work tend to only have one thing in mind: providing clean water. This is definitely a main focus but the close link between water and sanitation is to close to ignore. Poor hygiene and sanitation can put a water project completely at risk and jeopardize the whole project. Roughly 800 million people in the world lack access to clean drinking water but over 2.4 billion people live in an environment with poor sanitation. Depending on the type of water source these 2.4 billion people have, their water could be at risk to contamination.
In many areas without adequate sanitation or hygiene practices, open defecation is the main practice. With this practice, any rain can cause run off contaminating any source of water. The bacteria can also infiltrate ground water risking contamination to any water table. If someone is to drink this contaminated water, bacteria or parasites can easily spread. The focus on sanitation is fundamental to human beings and social economic development.
Communities that lack toilets but do have clean water are also at regular risk of contamination from improper hygiene. Many people will collect water early in the mornings and that water will sit there the whole day as it is getting used. If people are not using proper restroom facilities or hand washing stations, they are dipping their dirty hands into the clean water to use it. The more they do this, the worse the water becomes. Even with a clean water project completed and very successful, sanitation can prevent it from fully flourishing.
The lack of sanitation is worse for girls and women. To avoid being in vulnerable to abuse to sexual assault many will wait until night to use the rest room. With lack of bathrooms at school, girls feel embarrassed to be there during puberty due to the inability to seek privacy.
Improved sanitation and hygiene facilities can change all of this. The risk of water contamination can completely disappear. Girls can live in a much more safer environment with constant consideration of sanitation during water resource projects. MissionCleanWater has created an organizational plan to always keep sanitation and hygiene into all our clean water projects. Our team of engineers specialize in water resources, sanitation, and solar installation. We are ready.
